Veterans Day

Tomorrow is Veterans Day, celebrated to honor all Veterans.

History – At the 11th hour of the the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 the Armistice between the Allies and Germany ended hostilities for The Great War (WW I.)

One year later (1919,) President Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day with the words

To us in America, the reflections of armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations

In 1954 Armistice Day was officially changed to Veterans Day to better signify that not just the Veterans of The Great War but Veterans of all wars should be honored on November 11th.

Who are the Veterans? There have been millions of Americans who have or are serving their country’s armed forces. Veterans are everywhere. The Veteran doesn’t always stand out because in time of peace or at home he is just like you. The Veteran might be 18 or 80, male or female, fit or feeble. The Veteran might be the co-worker next to you, the person greeting you at Church, selling you a quart of oil at the hardware store or having a cup of coffee next to you at Starbucks. The Veteran is an ordinary person, doing an extraordinary job when called to do so.

What can you do for Veterans Day? If you can, take part in a formal observance of Veterans Day. Here in Anacortes, we have a service orchestrated by the Boy Scouts and American Legion at Causland Memorial Park each year at 11am. If you can not participate in a formal ceremony, take a moment at 11am and reflect on all those serving and those who have served their country. Look around your community, Say Thank You to those who have made it possible for you to go about your everyday life.
